Where AI Is Already Working in Trade Businesses — and How Fast It's Spreading
Last post, we looked at where trade businesses stand on AI adoption overall. This time: among contractors who've actually started, where in the business is AI showing up first — and how quickly is it moving past the office?
The Five Areas Where Trade Contractors Are Using AI Today
ServiceTitan's 2026 State of AI in the Trades survey asked exactly that. Here's what contractors reported:
- Administration — 59%. Billing, reporting, data analysis, compliance tracking.
- Marketing & Sales — 51%. Lead generation, personalization, ad optimization.
- Customer Service & Communication — 39%. Chatbots, call routing, virtual agents.
- Operations — 39%. Field scheduling, predictive maintenance, fleet management.
- Design & Planning — 19%. AI-assisted modeling, drone-based monitoring — mostly larger commercial projects.
Notice the pattern: administration and marketing/sales — the two biggest categories — are high-volume, repetitive, and easy to measure. That's not an accident. Contractors are pointing AI at the work that eats the most hours for the least judgment. It's also exactly the kind of work that doesn't wait for you to feel ready — it's still sitting in your inbox tonight either way.
The Field Is Next — and It's Moving Fast
The report frames this as AI "solving immediate operational bottlenecks" before spreading into field operations and project planning. Office first, field next — and the businesses already running AI in the office have a running start once it does.
Gulfshore Air Conditioning & Heating, a Florida-based HVAC company, integrated AI throughout its operations — from first customer contact to final invoice. The result: a 22% year-over-year increase in close rates. (Illustrative of one customer's experience — your results will depend on your own business.) That's not a company that waited for the technology to mature. That's a company that started with billing and scheduling and kept going.
The Part Most Owners Underestimate
If you're a solo operator or run a small crew, this is where I'd stop you: administration and marketing/sales aren't "big company" problems. If you're the owner doing your own billing at 9pm or manually chasing lead follow-up between jobs, this is exactly where AI pays off first — not a flashy new capability, just hours back in your week, starting this month.
"AI in the trades" often gets pitched as some distant leap. The data says otherwise. Right now, it's mostly faster paperwork and better lead follow-up — unsexy, immediate, and exactly where most small trade businesses bleed the most time every single week they don't address it. If you want to know exactly where those hours are hiding in your own business, that's what a free diagnosis is for.
